Irish Deposit Return Scheme

Ireland Embraces a Greener Future with New Irish Deposit Return Scheme

Mission - Green Background Logos

Ireland has taken a significant leap towards environmental sustainability and waste reduction with the introduction of a nationwide Irish deposit return scheme (DRS) for plastic drink bottles and aluminium cans. Launched on 1 February, this innovative scheme aims to revolutionise recycling practices across the country, encouraging consumers to return their drink containers in exchange for a deposit refund.

Irish Deposit Return Scheme

The DRS is a key component of Ireland’s commitment to building a circular economy, as outlined in the Programme for Government 2020. By implementing a deposit on drink containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres, the scheme incentivises consumers to recycle, thereby reducing litter and promoting environmental stewardship. Containers carrying the Re-turn logo, when returned empty and undamaged to participating retailers, yield a deposit of 15 cents for sizes between 150ml to 500ml, and 25 cents for larger sizes up to 3 litres.

Public Enthusiasm and Support

The Irish public has shown overwhelming support for the DRS, with research indicating a strong willingness to participate in the scheme. This enthusiasm is mirrored in the government’s optimistic outlook, with the Minister of State for Communications and the Circular Economy, Ossian Smyth, hailing the DRS as a “once-in-a-generation development” for the Irish beverage industry. Smyth’s statement underscores the expected benefits: enhanced recycling rates, reduced litter, and a positive impact on the environment.

Industry Criticism of the DRS

Despite the scheme’s broad acceptance, some consumers have expressed concerns about storage space for uncrushed containers and the perceived complexity of participating in the DRS. Addressing these challenges is crucial for the scheme’s success, necessitating clear communication and public education efforts to streamline the process for all involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our paper straws are made by stacking 3 plies of high-quality food grade kraft paper and putting them through a core-winding machine that applies an adhesive and rolls the straws into shape. They are then cut to size, coated in lacquer to ensure quality and are then ready to be sold.
