China’s Toxic Straw Exports

Mission - Green Background Logos

Be careful before you order those cheap paper straws online, as you can’t be sure what you’re buying. Don’t be enticed by the low prices for paper straws you can import from overseas because, as usual, you will get what you pay for. The paper straw market is still being flooded by cheap imports from countries such as China, but industry insiders have issued a chilling warning. Investigators found that as many as 90% of paper straws in the Shanghai market failed to meet the required quality standards.

There are many cheap imported paper straw products on the market that manufacturers are not providing information about the materials used on the product labels. Food experts are warning that these cheap straw imports are likely to contain hazardous chemicals that can dissolve into your beverage. These substances can cause damage to your digestive systems, they can impact the development of children, they can damage reproductive ability and a long list of other problems.

It is important you make sure you are purchasing products from reputable manufacturers that do identify the materials they use in manufacturing and are transparent about their manufacturing practices.

Speaking of JBX PaperPak, you can trust no manufacturer more than you can us. We are completely transparent about the products we produce, the materials we use and how we run our business. All of our straws are made by us at our Dublin facility; therefore, we know everything that goes into them: Food-grade kraft paper, plant-based lacquer and non-toxic adhesives and dyes. That is it. There are no harmful substances in our straws or anything else that can put you or the environment at risk when using them. Our products are all 100% plastic-free, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable, and we run JBX on a zero-waste basis. We are the safe, ethical choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our paper straws are made by stacking 3 plies of high-quality food grade kraft paper and putting them through a core-winding machine that applies an adhesive and rolls the straws into shape. They are then cut to size, coated in lacquer to ensure quality and are then ready to be sold.
